Personal Experience
Joel Kamau is a seasoned marketing and commercial executive with a distinguished career in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector. Over the years, he has held pivotal leadership positions at some of the world’s most respected companies, including Unilever, Coca-Cola, and East African Breweries Limited (EABL).
During his tenure at EABL, Kamau served as the Commercial Director, where he played a critical role in driving innovation by scaling up new technological platforms to enhance product accessibility and improve distribution quality across the region.
In April 2025, after seven transformative years at EABL, Kamau took a bold step into the oil and gas sector, joining Proto Energy—Kenya’s leading LPG distribution company—as Chief Executive Officer. Describing the move as both a personal and professional reinvention, Kamau humorously reflected on his journey through all states of matter: from working with solids at Unilever, liquids at Coca-Cola and EABL, to now leading innovation in gases at Proto Energy.
Kamau’s career transition was shaped by thoughtful mentorship and strategic guidance, notably from the leadership principles outlined in The First 90 Days, a book he considers his “transition bible.” He credits his ability to navigate change to a disciplined mindset, patience, and a strong belief in trusting the process.
In addition to his role at Proto Energy, Kamau serves as the Sales and Marketing Director at Aspectus Kenya Limited, a Nairobi-based renewable energy company specializing in solar PV systems, solar water heating, and solar-powered water pumping solutions. At Aspectus, he contributes to the mission of providing affordable, clean, and sustainable energy solutions aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #7.
